We planned our escape carefully. How do you get out of town without putting yourself and others at risk?
In the end, we rented a car, picked it up and wiped it down, and took a day trip to one of our favorite local vacation spots, Whidbey Island.
It was a nice day! Gloomy weather, but I enjoy gloom and summer rainstorms. We stayed inside the car on the ferry, wore masks and kept to ourselves on the island, and ate takeout food at a rocky beach in Oak Harbor.
Most shops were closed but there was plenty of nature and good coffee. Birds were everywhere, making noise. Touch of Dutch was open in Coupeville and selling salty imported licorice. It felt great to be elsewhere for a bit! After a few hours of happy meandering, we took the long way home, south on Highway 9 toward the city, following the route with maximum trees.
