Learn More about the Series
The Emerald City Spies series was inspired by the notion of “Seattle Nice” and Cheri’s experiences working in the business community. Seattle has many lovely qualities but beneath the surface there’s a certain ruthlessness to Seattle capitalism. The city has a tendency to invite people in, chew them up, and spit them out. The emerald city’s dark side goes right back to the time of the Klondike Gold Rush, and the city’s history of duality (light and dark) inspired Jessica’s story.
It’s also a story about clever spies, scheming bosses, and the imperfect ways we try to protect the people we love. The series is a trilogy, one story told across three novels, starting with a young woman recruited into a shadowy agency that’s more than it seems, and following her experiences there.
The Dana Duke agency is pure fiction but the location isn’t! The Columbia Center is one of Cheri’s favorite buildings in Seattle. There’s an observatory for visitors, a private business club on the top floor, and a Starbucks on the 4oth floor that offers lovely views of the city. If you come for a visit check it out!
In The Assistant, Jessica and Taylor live in an older apartment in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood. And Jessica and Andy’s date takes place at Aqua along the Seattle waterfront. The imagined location of Torres, Michaels, and Burke is at S Jackson and 5th Ave S, across from Union Station near Seattle’s International District.
Several scenes in the series take place at Victor Steinbrueck Park, a tiny little spot near Pike Place Market that’s delightfully gloomy in the rain.
