I won’t go into the plot here, nor am I a book reviewer, but I want to say how much I admire Atwood’s ability to reveal a character’s inner world. Here she is, writing from the perspective of Aunt Lydia, one of the most hated villains of the first book:
“Such regrets are of no practical use. I made choices, and having made them, I had fewer choices. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one most traveled by. It was littered with corpses, as such roads are. But as you will have noticed, my corpse is not among them.”
In the moment where you want to despise a villain, but you find yourself understanding them, the author has done their job well.
